They’d saved her from the streets of Moscow, and for what? To be chained down for five hours in this rapidly heating box with only this salty, empty jelly to eat?

It wasn’t right.

Blistering air hit her lungs. Her legs and body convulsed.

One gentle bark.

Then Laika died.

 

Laika was the first space dog. She was chained inside Sputnik 2 before it was launched, with no intention for her survival. The world was told she was euthanized in space with poisoned food. This was not true. It was found out later there was a malfunction that caused the craft to heat up to the point where it killed her. This stamp commemorates her.
